OCEL has specialist expertise and experience of investigation and project implementation in marine and coastal engineering. Such capability requires a detailed knowledge and practical understanding of coastal and ocean processes, including shoreline responses, to allow assessment of the effects of such processes on engineering solutions and conversely the effects of engineering modifications to coastal and ocean processes. Involvement in the design and construction of civil engineering works in the marine environment requires understanding of the practical and theoretical design requirements unique to this situation of potential erosion damage to property and infrastructure. Involvement with a number of projects in exposed coastal locations provides OCEL personnel with a good knowledge of relevant environmental conditions, the considerations of potential sea level rise, and the full range of options for retreat or intervention.
Over recent years OCEL has been involved in coastal process engineering and investigation through the design and assessment of various coastal and marine projects including the assessment of environmental effects and preparation and support of consent applications.
